Finding new ways of living and relating
Why the picture of three hearts overlapping one another? Because it represents the central focus of my counseling: to help people connect (or reconnect) their hearts to God, to significant people in their lives, or to themselves.
And why the emphasis on the heart? Because God designed the heart to be the source of love and life, and it is central to all relationships.
The tragedy is that too many people close off their hearts to God or other people - and even to themselves; they “shut down.” And when this "disconnect" happens their relationships suffer or they find themselves simply existing and not really living.
I believe the role of counseling is to help people get to the heart of the matter: to discover the source of their disconnect, to break free from self-destructive patterns and habits, and to find new ways of living and relating.
I like to refer to myself as a relationship therapist. What I love doing the most, and when I feel I am at my best as a therapist, is helping people to resolve relational conflicts or problems.
Maybe it is an individual seeking therapy for something within them that's keeping them from loving or relating with a full heart.
Maybe it is a couple who feel discontented, passion-less or simply "co-existing" in their marriage.
Maybe it is a parent and their teenager who can't seem to find anyway to relate to one another other than through anger.
I am convinced that with God's help a broken relationship can be restored, a dysfunctional family can be healthy, and hope can be renewed. Therefore, I see my role as a counselor is to partner with God and people in facilitating change; to be a guide on the path toward healing and growth.
